Putin Responds to US Missile Strikes Against Syria

There will be consequences Russian President Vladimir Putin “regards the [US missile strikes against Syria] as aggression against a sovereign nation,” according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. Peskov also noted that Putin believes the strikes are “in violation of international law, and also under an invented pretext.”

It's still unclear how many have died in the strike, or if any Russian servicemen were stationed at the Syrian base that was attacked (we've seen conflicting reports about this, so we're waiting for the dust to settle).

The problem is that if any Russians were injured or killed in the strike, this now becomes a direct conflict between the US and Russia. According to Peskov, the missile strikes will further "damage" US-Russia relations, and will have consequences.

We expect Russia will respond with serious asymmetric warfare or even undisguised acts of retaliation — entire armies of "moderate" rebels evaporating overnight. Etc. But Russia has a host of options on the table. As always, Putin is keeping his cards close to his chest.
